Living It Out

Gold is where you find it. That is a true saying and a useless one, and the men who repeat it most are generally the men who have brought out the least.

The ones who actually find color do not stand about waiting for the ground to offer something. They go where the river has been dropping it for ten thousand years, and they go every day, and they outfit properly before they start. Nobody walks into the hills with one day’s water and a borrowed pick and comes back rich.

This part of the claim is about the doing. Not what to believe — that is settled elsewhere on this site and it was settled at a cross. This is about what a man does on Tuesday with what he says he believes.

What Does It Cost, and Have You Counted It?

Jesus asked about towers rather than mines, but it is the same question. Which of you, intending to build a tower, does not first sit down and work out the cost, in case he lays a foundation and cannot finish — and everyone who walks past afterwards says this man began to build and was not able to finish.

Who would walk onto a concert platform to play the piano without first learning the piano, and without first learning how to give a concert? Nobody. And yet there is a whole way of being a Christian that amounts to exactly that, and it produces exactly the result you would expect.

Counting the cost is not pessimism. It is the difference between a man who finishes and a man who becomes a story other people tell.

What Were the Hundred and Twenty Doing While Nothing Happened?

Waiting, and praying, with one mind, for ten days, on the strength of an instruction and no visible evidence.

Then the noise like a rushing wind filled the house, the tongues of fire came to rest on each of them, and they went out and turned the city upside down. And we are still living off what those hundred and twenty did in that upper room — hospitals and schools among the plainer fruits of it, and that is before counting anything else Christians have managed in two thousand years.

Peter was one of them. The same Peter who a few weeks earlier had sworn blind he had never met the man. Afterwards people carried their sick into the street hoping his shadow might fall across them, and when he was hauled up in front of the rulers and elders he told them to their faces that there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.

That is not a story about Peter improving. It is a story about what the Holy Spirit does with an ordinary coward who showed up and waited.

Why Do Most of Us Fish Where We Already Know There Is Nothing?

Four men who fished Galilee for a living — and they were not poor, whatever the paintings suggest. The Zebedee Wholesale Fish Company employed crews and owned deep-water boats. James had five men working under him besides the hired servants. These were businessmen who knew that lake the way a farmer knows his own field.

And they had worked all night and caught nothing, and a carpenter told them to put out into the deep and let their nets down again.

Every reason not to was a good reason. They had just done it. They knew the water. They knew the hour. He knew timber. The only thing on the other side of the argument was that he had said so — and that turned out to be enough to break the nets.

There is a kind of failure that is not laziness at all. It is diligent, experienced, exhausting effort in water you have already proved empty, and the only cure for it is being willing to be told by someone who knows more than you do.

Can You Give Thanks Before the Harvest Comes In?

The British had a harvest festival called Lammas Day, on the first of August, when bread was baked from the new wheat and offered in thanks. Hard-headed people that they were, they saw no reason to hold it at all if the harvest had been poor.

Set that beside 1620. They landed unequipped in almost every way that mattered — townspeople, shopkeepers and tradesmen, few of whom had farmed or built anything, who had not even brought the right tools for felling timber or the right lines and hooks for fishing. Half of them were dead by spring. Of eighteen wives, four survived, and the likeliest reason is that the mothers went without so the children could eat. There were days that January when only a handful of men were well enough to do the work of staying alive.

And out of that they held a thanksgiving.

Not because the harvest justified it. Because they had come for something that did not depend on the harvest, and they still had it. They sought a faith’s pure shrine. Thanksgiving that only shows up when the yield is good is not thanksgiving; it is accounting.

Why Is Any of This Worth the Trouble?

Because none of it is self-improvement, and the moment it becomes self-improvement it dies.

You count the cost because you are building something for God and you mean to finish it. You wait like the hundred and twenty because the power is his to give and not yours to generate. You put out into the deep because the one giving the order bought you with his own blood and has never once been wrong about the water. You give thanks in a hard winter because what you came for was never the harvest.

Peter had it exactly right in front of the council, and he had earned the right to say it the hard way: there is no other name under heaven, given among men, whereby we must be saved.

Everything on this page is what that looks like on a Tuesday.
